FAQs About Counselling (UK)
Starting therapy can raise a lot of questions. Below you’ll find answers to some of the most common things people want to know before beginning counselling.

FAQ'S - All
How do I know if counselling is right for me?
If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure how to move forward, therapy can help you explore what’s happening and develop new ways of coping. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from counselling.
You can learn more about specific areas on my Issues Worked With page, including Anxiety, Depression, and Stress & Work Stress.
What happens in the first session?
Your first session is a chance to talk about what brings you to therapy and what you hope to achieve. We’ll discuss how counselling works, set some goals together, and decide if it feels like the right fit for you.
How long are sessions and how often do they take place?
Sessions usually last 50–60 minutes and take place weekly, though this can be flexible depending on your needs. Some clients prefer fortnightly sessions once they feel more stable.
How many sessions will I need?
There’s no set number. Some people find short-term counselling helpful over a few weeks, while others prefer ongoing sessions for deeper personal growth. We’ll regularly review your progress together.
Is counselling confidential?
Yes, everything you share is confidential. The only exceptions are where there’s a serious risk of harm to yourself or others, or if required by law. Confidentiality and its limits are always discussed clearly at the start.
Do I need a GP referral?
No referral is needed. You can contact me directly to book your first appointment.
If you’re waiting for NHS or CAMHS support, you can still begin therapy privately — see Private vs NHS Counselling for more information.
How much does counselling cost?
Fees vary depending on the therapist and session length. You can request my fees via the contact page.
Do you offer online counselling?
Yes. Many clients prefer online sessions for convenience and privacy. Remote counselling can be just as effective as in-person sessions.

What if I’m nervous about starting therapy?
It’s completely normal to feel anxious about your first session. Therapy moves at your pace, and there’s no pressure to talk about anything you’re not ready for. The goal is to make you feel comfortable, supported, and understood.
What types of issues can counselling help with?
Counselling can support you with a wide range of emotional difficulties, including:
You can explore the full list on the Issues Worked With page.
What if I want to stop therapy?
You’re always in control of your counselling journey. If you decide to pause or end therapy, we’ll talk about how to close the process safely and review what you’ve gained from the work.
